Dec 31
Well its been a while since my last post and since I’ve celebrated my 29th Birthday on December 19th, Spent a wonderfull Christmas with my family ( pictures for both here ), and getting ready to ring 2008 ! Sitting here thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2008 I only have a few easy to reach goals IMHO :
- Make it to 4 Linux confrences this year ( Penguicon, Ubuntu Developers Summit [ 1 of 2 ], SCALE, and Ubuntu Live )
- Give atleaste 1 talk at a OpenSource Confrence, and run 1 Local “Package Jam” here in Kansas City
- Quit Smoking Cigarettes
- Decide between a eeepc or Mac Book for my next “mobile” machine
- Upgrade all my systems to use FL/OSS friendly vendors like Dell,Intel,Apple etc. ( I’m not talking 100% ideal companies, but ones that atleaste show some effort )
- Keep and install of Ubuntu GNOME arround alongside my Main Kubuntu KDE ( I’m still a kde guy through and through, but its good to see the “other side” from time to time )
- Blog and Post Photos ( to flickr ) more Regularly
Also on a side note this year I’ve introduced all my imediate family members to Ubuntu and they all continue to use it ( Wife, Stepfather, Brother, and Mother ) instead of XP or Vista, My “support” phone calls have basicly dissapeared.
And with that, I wish every one a safe and Happy 2008… May this be the year of the Linux Des… ahh nevermind, yall enjoy the holiday.

What is a “Package Jam”?
I also live in Kansas City and am comforted to know there are other hardcore Ubuntuers in my area.

@Shane , kool, nice to see someone intrested in the area ( other than the fellas at my LUG :P )
Anyhow being a Ubuntu Core Developer and MOTU I’m looking to run a “Package Jam” here in our hometown soonish ( January sometime, and maybe again if its popular ) , Jono first decribed a PackageJam here http://www.jonobacon.org/?p=1082 , but basicly it boils down to a Core Dev, MOTU, or Experinced Debian/Ubuntu Packager gets a local group in a room and teaches them the basics of making and maintaining Ubuntu Packages 1 on 1 , or a small group setting.
imbrandon@kubuntu.org or brandon@imbrandon.com is you want to drop me a line sometime aobut it.

It boggles my mind that you would need two installations of Linux to have both GNOME and KDE installed. Why can Ubuntu not simply support having both packages installed simultaneously, and let you pick what kind of session you want when you log into your display manager, as Debian does?

You can do that in Ubuntu, it works fine.

Sure you can do that just fine, just install them both, kdm or gdm will add the sessions just as with Debian, no big change there, but the main reason I _personaly_ dont do that is if i have the foreign ( to me ) enviroment in a VM or seperate box, then I can much more freely switch between apps try and comparing the ones I like / dislike etc without affecting my “production” workstation.
